“How can you be a fan of a cover band?” asks Newark, Delaware power-pop band red number 40.
These musicians demand an answer by providing energetic original music to a scene dominated by cover,
jam and heavy-metal bands. The band appeals to music fans who want to see musicians expressing themselves
and playing their own music instead of parroting back popular songs from the radio.
Formed by Tim Patton and Mark Leone, the two remaining members of the cult-popular band The Expedients,
red number 40 continues where The Expedients left off. The band explores aspects of self, relationships,
and self-doubt/degradation with healthy portions of introspection, cynicism, and humor. Their
sets consist of original music combined with a stage show that is both over the top and tongue-in-cheek
at the same time.
Listening to their songs, it’s obvious that this is a total band effort. Lyrics are carefully
thought out and set to music that blends genres of alternative, rock, and emo. Catchy hooks come
not only from guitar lines from guitarist/vocalist Mark Leone, (Flinch, Blenderette - later Maximum Jack) but are also heavily showcased by
bassist Tim Patton (Drive All Day). Chris Brisiel (Seven Gone, No Escape, Drive All Day) keeps the
songs grounded with solid and inspired drum parts and Greg Boulden (Faint of Heart, Made, Clayton)
brings creative energy adding intricate guitar parts, dance moves, and additional
vocals. Band influences include, but are not limited to: Jimmy Eat World, Bob Mould, Nirvana, The Get Up
Kids, Elvis Costello, The Promise Ring, and The Descendents.
The name red number 40 has no significant meaning, though many have tried to attach one to it.
Around the time the band formed Tim noticed the phrase “red 40” on the ingredient list of a can of
grape soda. He decided this would be the perfect name for a power pop band (after changing the exact
wording so as not to get sued for trademark infringement).
Red number 40 has played bars, medium-sized halls, state fairs, and art galleries from northern NJ to
Baltimore, MD. They have a dedicated fan base in their home state of Delaware, despite being located in the
nearly self-proclaimed Cover Band Capital of the World.
The band maintains a myspace page at myspace.com/rednumber40, and a web site at rednumber40.com with pictures, downloadable songs, a forum, and a
mailing list to keep in touch with fans.
